The science of sound therapy

Sound healing is ancient — but it's increasingly being studied with modern clinical methods. Here's an honest look at what the peer-reviewed research actually shows, and where the science is still growing.

Across dozens of clinical studies, sound-based interventions show a consistent pattern: they help calm the body's stress response. The strongest evidence points to reduced anxiety, lower stress markers, and a shift of the nervous system toward its "rest and restore" state.

We believe in being straight with you about this. Sound therapy is genuinely promising and remarkably safe, but it isn't a cure, and the research — while growing fast — is still maturing. Below, we share what the science supports, drawn from recent systematic reviews and randomised trials.

Where the evidence is strongest

Anxiety

Calming anxiety

A 2025 systematic review of singing bowl studies found it may meaningfully reduce anxiety across varied groups — including hospitalised elderly patients, people with Parkinson's disease, and patients awaiting surgery. In one randomised trial, a single session significantly lowered anxiety in adults compared with a waiting-list group.

Mood & depression

Lifting low mood

Several randomised trials reported reductions in depression scores when singing bowl therapy was added to usual care, and an observational study found singing-bowl sound meditation was associated with less tension, anger and fatigue, and improved wellbeing.

Stress response

Settling the nervous system

A 2025 scoping review of 34 studies concluded that calming sound — especially soothing, self-selected music — can lower physiological stress markers including cortisol, heart rate variability and blood pressure, shifting the body toward its parasympathetic "rest" state.

Sleep & brain activity

Rest and relaxation

Some trials report improved sleep quality and reduced sleepiness, and neurophysiology studies suggest singing bowls can influence brainwave activity associated with deep relaxation — though results here are more mixed and need larger studies.

How it may work

Vibration, resonance, and the relaxation response

Researchers describe several plausible mechanisms. As a form of vibroacoustic therapy, singing bowls combine audible sound with physical vibration, which may stimulate the body and brain together.

  • Slow, soothing sound activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the body's "rest and digest" mode.
  • Music-based interventions have been shown to lower cortisol, the body's main stress hormone.
  • Rhythmic sound may encourage "entrainment," where brainwaves gently synchronise toward calmer states.
  • Naturopathic and integrative research is also exploring targeted frequencies (such as 40 Hz) for pain and neurological health.
An honest note

What the research can't yet claim

We think it matters to be candid. The authors of the 2025 singing bowl review note that most trials so far are small and carry a high risk of bias — partly because it's very hard to "blind" someone to whether they're hearing a singing bowl. Results vary between studies, and sound therapy hasn't been shown to treat or cure medical conditions.

What it does appear to be is a safe, accessible, and genuinely calming practice that can support relaxation and wellbeing — best seen as a complement to, not a replacement for, medical care. That's exactly how we offer it.
